Sedation Dentistry Miami
Oral conscious sedation, also viewed as sleep dentistry is a wonderful aspect of modern dental procedures and protocol. For many years, the anxious, nervous or previously traumatized patient found it nearly impossible to visit the dentist regularly, until it was usually too late. These patients procrastinated to the point of losing most of their teeth when they finally made up their minds to see the dentist. It took a lot of courage, many times leading to great disappointment when finding out the alternatives were so limited. |
How does sedation dentistry help me?
After the examination, and diagnosis visit, the dentist makes certain the patient meets all the criteria for sedation treatment. Proceeds by the patient taking a small pill about 1-2 hours prior to their appointment. A companion will assist the patient to the office for their treatment, followed by the doctors possibly administering additional pills to satisfy the level of sedation needed to perform the procedure with no feeling of apprehension by the patient.
Is it safe?
This is extremely safe. It has been researched extensively and found to be as safe as taking a sleeping pill once in a while. The dosages used in these treatments is far below the recommended dosages of the medication. Some patients are well sedated with just the first pill, others may need more.
Will I feel any pain?
The absolute answer is NO . Sedation dramatically reduces the body's ability to be tense, or expectancy of a painful sensation. Therefore, the patient is free to just relax and enjoy the visit.
Do I need any medical examination for this method?
It is highly recommended that if you have not visited your physician for a physical in the last year, to do so. If you do not have a regular physician, our staff will recommend a practitioner that we utilize for this particular situation.
High Anxiety & High Fear Patients
Patients all have a certain story about a visit to the dentist when they were younger. Some of these stories are positive, but most are completely the opposite. Most are of a particularly bad experience or a bad treatment modality by a dentist or their staff. Either way, these patients will usually suffer the consequences of not following up with the dentist for a pure fear that a similar situation may arise.
Unfortunately, this patient’s oral health deteriorates severely and at times to the point of no return. The patient’s neglect over a prolonged period of time. Sedation dentistry is here to aid and help these patients willfully seek and have the procedures done that will revert the effects of neglect and time on their well being.
It is very powerful when a certain bad situation can affect someone’s life over the course of time and reach a point where it probably is affecting many aspects of their everyday life. For instance, this may affect someone in their job search, interviews, or their personal life. We have had many patients loose their jobs and marriages over a neglected mouth…it seemed. The underlying factor was not the mouth as much as it was how this bad situation affected their overall self esteem, their persona if you will. Then, we can relate it back to the root cause, which in many cases was the deteriorated oral condition.
Sedation dentistry comes in many forms. It may be as simple as some laughing gas which is very simple to use and reverse once the procedures are completed. Certain patients require more help. These may fall into a couple of other categories such as Oral sedation which is by using certain medications given orally or by mouth for the patient to relax and be able to sit through the procedures.
Others submitting themselves to extreme measures of corrections will be offered IV Sedation Dentistry. This form requires a small amount of special medications placed directly into the vein in a controlled fashion to relax the patient so much more dentistry can be performed during fewer procedures.
Which category do you fit into? If any of this sounds familiar, then we probably have an answer for your conditions.
